About

RUNI PALAR

Runi Palar was born in Pujokusuman Yogyakarta on the 26th of May 1946 with the name Sotjawaruni Kumala. Sotjawaruni as a teen was a Javanese traditional dancer that often performed in front of the nation’s guests. After marrying an interior designer Adriaan Palar, Sotjawaruni then was known as Runi Palar.

As a stay-at-home mother, Runi Palar began to design clothes and jewellery for herself as a hobby at home. Her creative and art skills was a legacy from her late father, Raden Tjokrosoeroso, a silversmith from Yogyakarta who was the first Indonesian to show and exhibit his silver craft and its making process in America on 1938.

In the ‘80s, Runi Palar began to be widely known and was often reviewed in various national’s magazines as a jewellery designer and someone who was successful in starting her own business that is now known as Small and Medium Enterprises or SMEs.

Runi Palar was consistent in producing jewelleries in the midst of constraints, so her jewelleries are often known as limited editions. In designing jewelleries, Runi Palar ideas and inspiration derive from natural items around her house, such as flowers, leaves, rocks, animals, marine creatures.
